Family Ownership at British Millerain

A Legacy Woven Through Six Generations...

In an industry defined by rapid change, shifting trends, and globalised production, British Millerain stands apart. Not just for our textiles, renowned worldwide for their durability, character, and craftsmanship, but for something far more personal: we are, and have always been, a family business. For more than 140 years, British Millerain has been guided by the hands, passion, and values of the Miller family. Our story is not simply one of fabric innovation; it is a story of continuity, responsibility, and pride passed from one generation to the next.

A Heritage That Begins in 1880

Our journey began in 1880, when the Miller family helped establish a small textile operation in the north of England. What started as a modest mill in Yorkshire grew steadily into a pioneering force in waxed cotton, thanks to a combination of curiosity, craftsmanship, and a willingness to innovate.

By the late 19th century, the Millers had already patented rain‑resistant finishes that would transform outerwear for generations to come. And as the company expanded, one thing remained constant: family leadership at every step.

Six Generations, One Purpose

Today, British Millerain is still owned and operated by the Miller family, now in its sixth generation. This continuity is rare in modern manufacturing, and it shapes everything we do:

1. Long‑Term Thinking Over Short‑Term Gains

Family ownership allows us to invest in the future, new machinery, sustainable processes, and innovative finishes, without compromising on quality or heritage.

2. A Culture of Craftsmanship

Skills, knowledge, and techniques have been passed down through generations. Many of our processes are still rooted in traditional methods, refined over decades.

3. Pride in Every Metre of Fabric

When your name is on the door, quality isn’t optional. It’s personal. Every roll of fabric that leaves our mill carries the weight of our family legacy.

4. A Commitment to People

We’ve always believed that a mill is only as strong as the people who run it. Many of our team members have been with us for decades, and some families have worked alongside ours for generations.

Family Values, Modern Vision

While our heritage is deeply rooted in tradition, our outlook is firmly focused on the future. Family ownership gives us the freedom to innovate responsibly, balancing performance with sustainability, and craftsmanship with modern expectations.

This is why we continue to invest in:

  -  More efficient dyeing and finishing processes

  -  PFC‑free and environmentally conscious treatments

  -  Responsible cotton sourcing

  -  New generations of waxed and dry wax fabrics

Proudly Made in the UK

Our mill in Greater Manchester remains the heart of British Millerain. Producing locally allows us to maintain the standards our family has upheld for more than a century, while supporting the community that has supported us in return.

Family ownership isn’t just a business structure; it’s a promise. A promise to preserve British textile heritage, to innovate with integrity, and to continue crafting fabrics that stand the test of time.

A Legacy That Lives in Every Fabric

When you choose British Millerain, you’re not just choosing a textile.

You’re choosing:

  -  A century of expertise

  -  A lineage of innovation

  -  A commitment to quality

  -  A family’s dedication to its craft

Our fabrics tell stories, of heritage, of craftsmanship, and of the people who have shaped them. And as we look to the future, one thing is certain: the Miller family will continue to weave its legacy into every metre we produce.
